What do we know about living things?
- Students brain storm and discuss what are living
things.
- Students (class) develop concept map on board. (This
could be done on Interactive White Board and saved).
All living organisms share common
characteristics that distinguish them from non-living things. They
grow; respond to stimuli (e.g. the sun); adapt to their
environment; reproduce; and respire (breath).
- Students observe living things in their backyard, school
grounds, and/or local environment. Students create their own
concept map using Inspiration, C-Map Tools or other mind
mapping software.
- Students compare aspects of their concept maps such as
differences and similarities. Are there any similar animals that
the students have observed such as termites? (link discussion to
termites). Are there any new words (e.g. for scientific literacy)
that students have raised?
- Students construct class word wall to contribute new
words (and their meaning) that they learn throughout Backyard
Biodiversity.
